At Apex, we specialize in Systems Learning™, providing evaluation services, program planning, needs assessment, facilitation, and technical assistance – including technology for data collection and reporting.
Unlike many data firms, we see technology as a means to an end, to help partners use data to build, share, test, and evolve their mental models about their work. That’s how we define the process of learning. It’s why reporting data is so important to us – putting information in the right hands at the right time in the right format for learning and decision-making. We believe effective evaluation and use of data can help organizations change systems, policies, conditions, and behaviors at the individual, community, organizational, and governmental levels.
As we say at Apex, “Context gives meaning to data; data without context is meaningless.” Our Systems Learning™ framework for Equitable Evaluation promotes sense-making from information, builds a body of credible evidence that includes lived experience, and centers perspectives of those most affected by the work.
We align ourselves with organizations and programs focused on addressing the wicked problems of health and education disparities, poverty and income inequality, and racism and discrimination. Our partners range from districts and schools, state agencies and federal entities, to nonprofits and change-makers across the United States. Apex has been honing our approach for over twenty years, focusing on a wide range of initiatives that address health, academic, social, and economic inequities. We focus our work on education, health, and social services, and the intersection of those sectors.
We care deeply about our community and our ability to support partners who are contributing to positive change. Their perspectives are invaluable as we do this work together, and we invite you to hear directly from them.

Being part of [the Meaningful Math for Student Success] initiative has been the highlight of my academic career. I am so grateful to have had my work supported by you and others from Apex. The work you did was truly top notch and enabled me to be a better PI and for our grant to help reach more students.

“I love Just Health. For the five minutes it takes the student to happily complete it using the iPad, I get valuable patient history that might be difficult to get otherwise due to time constraints and/or the discomfort of asking sensitive questions outright. I feel that the students are honest because of the format and how the questions are presented. I have had many important and enlightening conversations and have made potentially life-saving referrals based on Just Health.”

“There is no way that I would want to see teens without these tools. Just Health starts patients thinking about some of the things we will be talking about during the visit, so they are prepared to discuss sensitive topics with less warm up time. Great tool and great time saver. Thank you.”

“Using Just Health made it so much easier for our physicians and counselors to see which of our students were struggling with depression, drugs and alcohol, unsafe environments, unprotected sex, and keeping grades up. The iPads let the physicians and counselors see immediately where students are struggling in life, so they could get them the resources needed.”

“Using the iPads reduced the amount of time the providers had to devote to scoring the assessments by providing instant scoring and feedback for the providers to share with patients.”

“Adolescents and teens seem to share their thoughts more completely in electronic media rather than on a piece of paper. The answers we are getting are more complete and allow us to address concerns at a deeper level than we previously could.”

“Implementation of the Apex program has actually improved flow in the clinic. Most importantly, I have found the extended questionnaires have picked up on many patients who would be missed otherwise. We have implemented use on all ages, all visit types.”

“We truly believe Just Health was a game changer. It has allowed us to find and intervene with many issues that would not have otherwise been revealed and addressed. The iPad has been so crucial in allowing ‘the space between’ for adolescents to open up and mention their issues.”

As the Medical Director of a large network of school-based health centers, working with Apex has simplified the process of taking data from multiple sources and consolidating it for things like state reports as well as to create dashboards. This allows the team at Urban Health Plan to compare not just how each of our school sites are doing individually but also how we compare to similar benchmarks that Apex has helped to identify.

I’ve been very impressed with the whole Apex team. It's been painless from an IT perspective. They have everything scoped out. They tell you exactly what they need, and the SFTP connection makes it seamless. Previously, it was a nightmare. Apex has been able to standardize the data elements. I can’t tell you how wonderful it’s been that we’re not spending hours trying to validate data and going from spreadsheet to spreadsheet. Apex has found a niche, and they do a very, very good job.

We worked with Apex and Athena to make sure all the connections were there. It really takes a lot off my plate as the director of the program. We’re a small agency, a federally qualified health center. We decided that this was the best thing for our organization, this was the best thing to get the correct data for school-based health, so we decided that we weren’t going to stop. The Apex reports come back and they’re accurate, they’re up to date, and we’re very thankful to have worked with Apex. It’s made us more efficient overall.
