The New Mexico Department of Health’s Comprehensive Cancer Program offers cancer information and resources to the public and health care providers. Cancer is New Mexico’s second leading cause of death, and skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in New Mexico and the U.S. Since 2014, Apex has been working with the New Mexico Department of Health Comprehensive Cancer Program, school districts and other stakeholders to curb the growing incidence of melanoma in New Mexico by increasing sun safe practices among elementary-age students. The approach includes varied methods, including the collaborative creation and dissemination of a Toolkit for Creating Sun Safe Policies for New Mexico Schools and Districts and the collaborative design of a Sun Safety Policy and Practices Assessment Tool.
